The original Manhattan theater to showcase multiple screens in at one time, the Quad Cinema is an important historical location in New York that first opened in 1972. Now, with the direction of Pentagram and fabrication expertise of DCL, the Quad Cinema has been completely rebranded from the ground up with the vision of its owner, Charles S. Cohen.
Most iconic is the exterior / interior transitional electric canopy signage. Easily seen with a custom font style developed by Pentagram, the awning features 25 feet of custom fabricated aluminum with face lit lighting and extended reverse letter forms - forming a single unit for the exterior and interior feature sign.
The exterior was specifically engineered with sloping tops to account for water runoff. It also includes 4 rows of custom LED display units on the extended returns to display movies and showtimes.
The underside of the exterior canopy also features custom cut out letters backed with acrylic and illuminated. Combined with the face-lit "QUAD" - the cinema has branding prominently visible from nearly every angle to passerbys - while still remaining modest and thoughtful to the surrounding area.
